Enhancing Drone Capabilities with AI: Red Cat and Athena Collaboration
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – June 20, 2023 – Red Cat Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: RCAT), a military technology company focusing on integrating robotic hardware and software to support warfighters, announces the successful completion of the second phase of its partnership with Athena AI. This partnership aims to enhance Red Cat’s Teal 2 military-grade drone with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision capabilities.
Initially announced in March, the collaboration has made significant progress. Athena’s AI technology successfully performed target recognition and battle tracking during a nighttime test flight of the Teal 2 drone, using thermal imaging sensor data. This innovation provides commanders with fast, AI-assisted decision-making capabilities on the battlefield.
“Nighttime computer-vision capability is a Teal 2 add-on we support for users who need high-value data at night,” stated George Matus, founder and CEO of Red Cat subsidiary Teal Drones. “The images and insights that Athena’s technology deliver are outstanding. Athena’s battle-tracking capabilities and artificial intelligence, combined with Teal’s best-in-class drone, give warfighters the unfair advantage.”
Advancing Military Decision-Making: Athena AI Technology
Athena, an AI-enabled military decision-support company based in Australia, has licensed its proprietary computer-vision architecture to Red Cat. This advanced technology allows high-speed object tracking and in-depth data exploitation at slower speeds. Additionally, Athena’s solution can identify weapons, humans, and other targets at night, as well as Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) markers, such as Cyalume HALOs and IR beacons.
“Unlike many other drones in the sUAS quad space that aren’t MISB-compliant, the Teal 2’s KLV metadata unlocks the full decision-suite support of Athena AI,” noted Athena CEO Stephen Bornstein. “This combination of a nighttime sUAS with live-vehicle metadata allows for real-time situational awareness to support battle tracking, common operational picture (COP) at higher echelons of command, and accurate targeting.”
Introducing the Teal 2: Leading Night Operations Drone
Officially launched in April, the Teal 2 drone is designed to dominate night operations. The Teal 2 is the first sUAS equipped with Teledyne FLIR’s new Hadron 640R sensor, providing users with the highest resolution thermal imaging in a small form factor. The drone delivers time-critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) technology, allowing operators to make smarter, faster decisions. Red Cat will showcase the Teal 2 at the Modern Day Marine expo in Washington, D.C., from June 27-29.
